James was born in September 1893 in Bolton.1  James' father was Frederick Thomas Parkinson and his mother was Eliza Ann Mather.  His maternal grandparents were Robert Mather (Cunliffe) and Alice Heaton. He had three brothers and four sisters, named Robert, Thomas, Fred, Sarah, Ethel, Lily and Hilda.  He was the second oldest of the eight children.
