Eliza was born in January 1870 in Bolton.1  Eliza's father was Robert Mather (Cunliffe) and her mother was Alice Heaton.  Her paternal grandparents were John Cunliffe and Eliza Mather. She had two brothers and two sisters, named John, Robert, Mary and Emily.  She was the second oldest of the five children.

‌Eliza and Frederick were married in a religious ceremony in 1891 at Bolton Emmanuel.2  They had four sons and four daughters, named James, Robert, Thomas, Fred, Sarah, Ethel, Lily and Hilda.  There are no more children.
