Robert was born in September 1883 in Bolton and his baptism took place on March 12th, 1884 at Bolton Holy Trinity.1 2  Robert's father was Robert Mather (Cunliffe) and his mother was Alice Heaton.  His paternal grandparents were John Cunliffe and Eliza Mather. He had a brother and three sisters, named John, Eliza, Mary and Emily.  He was the youngest of the five children.

‌Robert and Emily were married in a religious ceremony in 1906 at St. George (Little Bolton).3  They had a son named Thomas.  There are possibly more children.
