Tilston was born in September 1887 in Birkenhead.1  Tilston's father was Taliesin Owen and his mother was Mary Jane Jones. He had five brothers and three sisters, named William, Samuel, Taliesin, Harold, Arthur, Elizabeth, Margaret and Amy.  He was the youngest of the nine children.  He died at the age of 61 in June 1949 in Birkenhead.2
