Fred's father was George Openshaw and his mother was Ellen Buckley. His maternal grandparents were Jonathan Buckley and Mary Webster. He had a brother and four sisters, named Thomas, Emma, Alice, Mary and Ellen. He was the youngest of the six children. He died at the age of 58 in April 1941 in Manchester.²
