William was born in March 1884 in Bolton.1  William's father was John Mather and his mother was Catherine Byrne.  His paternal grandparents were Joseph Mather and Mary Harvey (Douglas). He had two brothers and two sisters, named John, Joseph, Sarah and Elizabeth.  He was the oldest of the five children.
