John was born in December 1886 in Bolton.1  John's father was John Mather and his mother was Catherine Byrne.  His paternal grandparents were Joseph Mather and Mary Harvey (Douglas). He had two brothers and two sisters, named William, Joseph, Sarah and Elizabeth.  He was the second oldest of the five children.
