John was born in June 1859 in Golborne.1  John's father was Joseph Mather and his mother was Mary Harvey (Douglas).  His paternal grandparents were John Mather and Ellen Birchall. He had two brothers named William and Thomas.  He was the oldest of the three children. He had a half-brother named Henry.
