William's father was Joseph Mather and his mother was Mary Harvey (Douglas).  His paternal grandparents were John Mather and Ellen Birchall. He had two brothers named John and Thomas.  He was the second oldest of the three children. He had a half-brother named Henry.  He died at the age of 7 in December 1868 in Golborne.¹
