William was born in 1830 in Turton and his baptism took place on June 13th, 1830 at Christ Church, Walmsley.1  William's father was Robert Mather and his mother was Ann Ainsworth.  His paternal grandparents were <unknown> and Ellen Mather. He had four brothers and three sisters, named John, Thomas, James, Robert, Peggy, Mary and Sarah.  He was the second oldest of the eight children.  He died at the age of 1 in December 1831 in Turton.  He was buried on December 22nd, 1831 at St. Anne (Turton).2
