Thomas was born in December 1841 in Turton.1  Thomas' father was Robert Mather and his mother was Ann Ainsworth.  His paternal grandparents were <unknown> and Ellen Mather. He had four brothers and three sisters, named William, John, James, Robert, Peggy, Mary and Sarah.  He was the fourth youngest of the eight children.  He died at the age of 1 in 1842 in Turton.1
