Thomas' father was James Mather and his mother was Elizabeth Woods.  His paternal grandparents were James (Jacobi) Mather and Margaret Wood. He had seven brothers and three sisters, named John, Joseph, William, James, John, Edmund, George, Margaret, Mary and Jane.  He was the fifth youngest of the eleven children.
