John's father was James Mather and his mother was Elizabeth Woods.  His paternal grandparents were James (Jacobi) Mather and Margaret Wood. He had seven brothers and three sisters, named Joseph, William, James, John, Thomas, Edmund, George, Margaret, Mary and Jane.  He was the oldest of the eleven children.  He died at 2 months old in March 1862 in Bolton.²
