John's father was James Mather and his mother was Elizabeth Woods.  His paternal grandparents were James (Jacobi) Mather and Margaret Wood. He had seven brothers and three sisters, named John, Joseph, William, James, Thomas, Edmund, George, Margaret, Mary and Jane.  He was the sixth oldest of the eleven children.  He died at the age of 78 on March 12th, 1949.

‌John and Catherine were married.
