Mary's father was James Mather and her mother was Elizabeth Woods.  Her paternal grandparents were James (Jacobi) Mather and Margaret Wood. She had eight brothers and two sisters, named John, Joseph, William, James, John, Thomas, Edmund, George, Margaret and Jane.  She was the third youngest of the eleven children.
