Margaret's father was James Mather and her mother was Elizabeth Woods.  Her paternal grandparents were James (Jacobi) Mather and Margaret Wood. She had eight brothers and two sisters, named John, Joseph, William, James, John, Thomas, Edmund, George, Mary and Jane.  She was the fifth oldest of the eleven children.
