Thomas was born on September 1st, 1850 in Blackrod and his baptism took place on October 6th, 1850 at St. Katherine (B'rod).¹²

Thomas' father was Thomas Mather and his mother was Alice Taylor. His paternal grandparents were Thomas Mather and Hannah (Ann) Holt. He had a sister named Sarah. He was the younger of the two known children. He died at the age of 40 in 1890 in Aspull.³
