Thomas was born in March 1874 in Turton.1  Thomas' father was Amos Mather and his mother was Hannah Hullock.  His paternal grandparents were Thomas Mather and Hannah (Ann) Kirkham. He had two brothers and six sisters, named Charles, Amos, Mary, Anne, Maggie, Alice, Sarah and Elizabeth.  He was the fifth oldest of the nine children.
