Amos' father was Amos Mather and his mother was Hannah Hullock. His paternal grandparents were Thomas Mather and Hannah (Ann) Kirkham. He had two brothers and six sisters, named Charles, Thomas, Mary, Anne, Maggie, Alice, Sarah and Elizabeth. He was the eighth oldest of the nine children.
