Margaret, known as Maggie, was born in March 1871 in Turton.1  Maggie's father was Amos Mather and her mother was Hannah Hullock.  Her paternal grandparents were Thomas Mather and Hannah (Ann) Kirkham. She had three brothers and five sisters, named Charles, Thomas, Amos, Mary, Anne, Alice, Sarah and Elizabeth.  She was the fourth oldest of the nine children.
