Samuel, known as Sam, was born in 1873 in Salford. Sam's father was James Mather and his mother was Nancy Ward.  His paternal grandparents were William Mather and Betty Edge. He had four brothers and a sister, named William, Peter, John, James and Sarah.  He was the second youngest of the six children.
