Peter was born in 1859 in Atherton.1  Peter's father was James Mather and his mother was Nancy Ward.  His paternal grandparents were William Mather and Betty Edge. He had four brothers and a sister, named William, John, James, Sam and Sarah.  He was the second oldest of the six children.
