James was born in July 1870 in Salford and his baptism took place there on July 17th, 1870.1 2  James' father was James Mather and his mother was Nancy Ward.  His paternal grandparents were William Mather and Betty Edge. He had four brothers and a sister, named William, Peter, John, Sam and Sarah.  He was the third youngest of the six children.
