John was born in 1862 in Atherton.1  John's father was James Mather and his mother was Nancy Ward.  His paternal grandparents were William Mather and Betty Edge. He had four brothers and a sister, named William, Peter, James, Sam and Sarah.  He was the third oldest of the six children.
