Roland's father was Alfred Mather and his mother was Mary Sanderson Lawson. His paternal grandparents were William Mather and Eliza Graham. He had two brothers and six sisters, named Wilfred, Alfred, Margaret, Gertrude, Eva, Louisa, May and Mary. He was the sixth oldest of the nine children. He died as a war casualty at the age of 18 on January 9th, 1919. His burial was in 1919 in Stockport.³
