Margaret's father was Alfred Mather and her mother was Mary Sanderson Lawson. Her paternal grandparents were William Mather and Eliza Graham. She had three brothers and five sisters, named Wilfred, Roland, Alfred, Gertrude, Eva, Louisa, May and Mary. She was the oldest of the nine children.
