Robert was born in 1884 at Egerton.1  Robert's father was Charles Mather and his mother was Ann Dewhurst.  His paternal grandparents were Thomas Mather and Hannah (Ann) Kirkham. He had three brothers and two sisters, named Thomas, (William), Edmund, Mary and Margaret.  He was the youngest of the six children.
