Robert's father was James Mather and his mother was Esther Mason.  His paternal grandparents were Ralph Mather and Ann Anderton. He had three brothers and four sisters, named Ralph, James, Jonathan, Ann, Sally, Betty and Ellen.  He was the oldest of the eight children.
