Sally was born in 1768 in Anderton and her baptism took place on December 4th, 1768 in Rivington.1 2  Sally's father was James Mather and her mother was Esther Mason.  Her paternal grandparents were Ralph Mather and Ann Anderton. She had four brothers and three sisters, named Robert, Ralph, James, Jonathan, Ann, Betty and Ellen.  She was the fourth oldest of the eight children.
