Richard's father was James Mather and his mother was Sarah Butterworth.  His paternal grandparents were James Mather and Mary Evans. He had five brothers and a sister, named Robert, James, Edwin, David, Samuel and Betty. He had an adopted sister named Mary.  He died at the age of 41 in April 1884 in Foulridge.  He was buried on May 1st, 1884 at St. Paul (Bury).
