Samuel's father was James Mather and his mother was Sarah Butterworth.  His paternal grandparents were James Mather and Mary Evans. He had five brothers and a sister, named Robert, James, Richard, Edwin, David and Betty. He had an adopted sister named Mary.  He died at the age of 15 in 1868 in Bolton.²
