Betty was born in 1837 in Bury.1  Betty's father was James Mather and her mother was Sarah Butterworth.  Her paternal grandparents were James Mather and Mary Evans. She had six brothers named Robert, James, Richard, Edwin, David and Samuel. She had an adopted sister named Mary.
