Ralph was born in 1750 in Heath Charnock and his baptism took place on June 17th, 1750 in Rivington.1 2  Ralph's father was Ralph Mather and his mother was Ann Anderton.  His paternal grandparents were Thomas Mather and Margaret Kellett. He had two brothers and four sisters, named Thomas, James, Ann, Betty, Elizabeth and Mary.  He was the youngest of the seven children.
