Rachel's father was John Mather and her mother was Sally Tong.  Her paternal grandparents were James Mather and Alice Collinge. She had four brothers and three sisters, named Ashton, Collinge, Charles, Henry, Betty, Lucy and Sarah.  She was the third oldest of the eight children.  She died at the age of 26 in March 1837 in Middleton.  She was buried on March 10th, 1837 at St. Leonard (Middleton).²
