Lucy's father was John Mather and her mother was Sally Tong.  Her paternal grandparents were James Mather and Alice Collinge. She had four brothers and three sisters, named Ashton, Collinge, Charles, Henry, Betty, Rachel and Sarah.  She was the fourth oldest of the eight children.
