Ashton was born in 1807 in Middleton and his baptism took place on April 19th, 1807 at St. Leonard (Middleton).1  Ashton's father was John Mather and his mother was Sally Tong.  His paternal grandparents were James Mather and Alice Collinge. He had two brothers and three sisters, named Charles, Henry, Betty, Rachel and Lucy.  He was the oldest of the six children.  He died at the age of 23 in March 1830 in Middleton.  He was buried on March 21st, 1830 at St. Leonard (Middleton).2
