Elizabeth, known as Betty, was born in August 1808 in Middleton and her baptism took place on August 28th, 1808 at St. Leonard (Middleton).1  Betty's father was John Mather and her mother was Sally Tong.  Her paternal grandparents were James Mather and Alice Collinge. She had four brothers and three sisters, named Ashton, Collinge, Charles, Henry, Rachel, Lucy and Sarah.  She was the second oldest of the eight children.
