Charles' father was John Mather and his mother was Sally Tong.  His paternal grandparents were James Mather and Alice Collinge. He had three brothers and four sisters, named Ashton, Collinge, Henry, Betty, Rachel, Lucy and Sarah.  He was the third youngest of the eight children.
