Mary's father was Jonathan Mather and her mother was Betsy Entwistle. Her paternal grandparents were Andrew Mather and Elizabeth (Isabella) Holden. She had three brothers and three sisters, named Isaac, Abraham, John, Alice, Esther and Jane. She was the oldest of the seven known children.
