Jane's father was Jonathan Mather and her mother was Betsy Entwistle. Her paternal grandparents were Andrew Mather and Elizabeth (Isabella) Holden. She had three brothers and three sisters, named Isaac, Abraham, John, Mary, Alice and Esther. She was the sixth oldest of the seven known children.
