Mary's father was Lawrence Mather and her mother was Jane Ward. She had two brothers and four sisters, named Samuel, John, Agnes, Mary, Elizabeth and Jane.  She was the fourth oldest of the seven children.  She died at the age of 1 in September 1852 in Bolton.¹
