John's father was Lawrence Mather and his mother was Jane Ward. He had a brother and five sisters, named Samuel, Agnes, Mary, Mary, Elizabeth and Jane.  He was the third youngest of the seven children.  He died at the age of 3 in December 1856 in Bolton.¹
