Mary was born in 1811 in Billinge and her baptism took place on June 2nd, 1811 at St. Aidan (Billinge).1  Mary's father was Isaac Mather and her mother was Mary Moyers.  Her paternal grandparents were Thomas Mather and Hannah Cross. She had four brothers and two sisters, named Richard, Isaac, William, William, Peggy and Hannah.  She was the third youngest of the seven children.
