Joshua's father was Joshua Mather and his mother was Margaret (Peggy) Mather.  His paternal grandparents were James Mather and Ann Berrington. He had three brothers and three sisters, named James, William, Peter, Ann, Sarah and Margaret.  He was the third youngest of the seven known children.  He died at the age of 61 in December 1882 in Wigan.
