John was born in 1826 in Atherton and his baptism took place on May 4th, 1826 at St. John the Baptist (Atherton).1 2  John's father was James Mather and his mother was Elizabeth (Betty) Jameson. He had a brother and three sisters, named Thomas, Margaret, Mary and Betty.  He was the youngest of the five known children.  He died at the age of 43 on June 10th, 1869 in Rumworth.  He was buried in June 1869 at St. Mary (Deane).3

‌John and Margaret were married in a religious ceremony on June 25th, 1848 at St. Mary-the-Virgin (Leigh).4   They had a son and a daughter, named Allen and Selina.  There are possibly more children.
