John was born in March 1840 in Bedford (Leigh).1  John's father was John Mather and his mother was Elizabeth Gregory.  His paternal grandparents were Henry Mather and Alice Boardman. He had two brothers named Henry and Thomas. He had an adopted sister named Alice.  He died at the age of 50 in June 1890 in Leigh.2

‌John and Sarah were married in a religious ceremony on March 30th, 1866 at Manchester Cathedral.3   They had two sons and a daughter, named Thomas, John and Mary.  There are no more children.
