Henry was born in 1837 in Leigh and his baptism took place on July 16th, 1837 at St. Mary-the-Virgin (Leigh).1  Henry's father was John Mather and his mother was Elizabeth Gregory.  His paternal grandparents were Henry Mather and Alice Boardman. He had two brothers named John and Thomas. He had an adopted sister named Alice.

‌Henry and Sarah were married in a religious ceremony in 1870 in Leigh.3  They had two sons and a daughter, named John, William and Elizabeth.  There are no more children.
