James' father was John William Mather and his mother was Charlotte Ann Swift.  His paternal grandparents were Robert Mather (Cunliffe) and Alice Heaton. He had three brothers and three sisters, named George, Arthur, Stanley, Alice, Lily and Emma.  He was the fourth oldest of the seven children.  He died at the age of 69 in July 1963 in Farnworth.²
