Alice was born in March 1891 in Bolton.1  Alice's father was John William Mather and her mother was Charlotte Ann Swift.  Her paternal grandparents were Robert Mather (Cunliffe) and Alice Heaton. She had four brothers and two sisters, named George, Arthur, James, Stanley, Lily and Emma.  She was the second oldest of the seven children.
