George was born in March 1889 in Bolton.1  George's father was John William Mather and his mother was Charlotte Ann Swift.  His paternal grandparents were Robert Mather (Cunliffe) and Alice Heaton. He had three brothers and three sisters, named Arthur, James, Stanley, Alice, Lily and Emma.  He was the oldest of the seven children.
